Philosophy
Imagine some day in the future. There are no humans, just computers talking to each other - or perhaps these computers are under the illusion that they are talking to each other.

Concept and reference points
Following on from learning how to output pure digital sound via the Apple Mac ‘Terminal’ it dawned on me to write a short play that had no people, only the voices of Ralph and Fred (Apple digital voices). The output of this future tense theatre would be two speakers on a stage having a conversation from left to right. Over the years I have seen many of Samuel Beckett’s plays, including ‘Rough for Theatre II’, ‘Eh Joe’ and ‘Krapp’s Last Tape’. All of them used minimal elements. I particularly like the use of the tape player in Krapp. He almost has a conversation with himself.

Testing
It took a while to master some of the sound software and to use the ‘Terminal’ to output and save - eventually I settled on using ‘Audacity’, a free sound software programme, to put the play together. Once the sound was saved from left to right speakers it was only a matter of putting it onto a CD. A short play was put on in Reading to test audience reaction. Feedback centred around whether or not speakers were needed and the possibility of output to the web for headphones.

Direction
The current play is only five minutes long. A more structured script will be developed and taken forward to more public arenas (such as arts festivals and competitions).
