Research

Influences for this project have been varied. The first work observed was generated in the 'Exhibition' area of the Processing home page. Some of the concepts were very interesting and I learnt some basic principles. To help generate alternative ideas I studied the work of Bruce Nauman, in particular the recent 'Raw Materials' exhibition in the Tate modern (please refer to my essay).

Two other alternative influences pushed my ideas into the physical world. Candice Breitz had an exhibition in White Cube, London (Sep. 2005). Famous actors were cut out of films and pasted onto black backgrounds on plasma screens and re-played alongside each other thus creating a new narrative. Stunning pieces! The other influence was the music of David Bowie, especially "Heroes" written in Berlin, 1977.

Prototype

On the tenth week of the Computer Principles Module we were asked to present our 'Prototype' ideas to Richard and the group. The two images below were projected in the MA Computer Arts room and I also produced two A3 colour prints of the images for display.

My main concept was to take a small video (with a mini digital camera) of an event or moment in time. Sweethearts in a cafe, a man reading a paper on the train, an administrator sealing an envelope in the office, etc. Video these for just one minute, freeze nine stills from the video and then randomly present them on an electric canvas - a moment in time, captured forever.

The other possibility was to photograph people as they arrived at an exhibition, then they become the 'random factor' art. A sort of 'random wallpaper'!

The images below are not displayed in the Processing code because for some unknown reason the code stopped working on the internet. This was very frustrating as there was very little help or support for such a problem. I decided to turn this frustration into positive energy and thus my next idea evolved, away from the computer.
